Myths about CPR – A SmartEngineer view

Having been involved with the Review process for over 10years a number of myths continue to provide poor advice to graduates preparing for the Chartered Professional Review. Whilst these were specific to Hong Kong graduates, all graduates can benefit from ensuring they don’t fall into the traps.

1 – I can run as fast as Bolt if I run in his race

Grads travel to distant Review centres to chase the pass rate. All Reviewers are trained / approved / quality checked by the ICE so any variation is minute. Similar to running next to Bolt – his performance is based on his talent & training, your performance will also be dependent on your talent & training.

2 – The more attempts I make the greater chance I have to pass

The Review is too robust a process to game, or benefit from multiple tries. Apart from gaining experience of the day (which can easily be replicated in other ways), each pair of Reviewers will focus & approach your Review differently. Best advice is to prepare properly and pass first time. (See myths 3, 4 &5)

3 – If I copy when preparing for the Review then I will have a greater chance to pass

Completing the preparation for the Review can unlock huge benefits is approached correctly. Copying not only adds none of this but will be found out. Don’t do it, you are stealing from yourself.

4 – I can approach the Professional Review like an amateur

Too many grads approach the Review as amateurs, which is completely at odds to how they work when undertaking their engineering tasks. An obvious one is how many plan their time effectively to the Review date and beyond.

It is also key is to get good feedback early and from a good a source as possible. Think of how a coach provides support to the professional athlete.

5 – The more time I spend on my preparation the better

Again, the professional approach ensures a good plan with plenty of time for other activities. The best approach I have seen is from a grad who did his preparation while also preparing for a triathlon. This down time ensures focus and freshness. AND if you need to work continuously on preparing for the Review then it basically says you are not ready.
